I’ve been practising and teaching origami for 20 years. My origami artwork uses a playful medley of upcycled, handmade and restored papers, ranging from exquisitely crafted sheets of Japanese washi to carefully selected magazine cutouts. Through a choreographed set of folds, pinches and tucks, each square of paper is transformed into a delicate sculpture.

The multicoloured collection of butterflies plays on the collective noun for butterflies - Kaleidoscope. They are arranged to give a sense of flight and bright, speckled movement, like the kaleidoscopes we used to play with as children.

This was the piece that kicked off my journey into origami butterflies. It was made as a gift for someone who loves the spring and summer months and the sense of freedom they bring. Scattered amongst the butterflies are words reminiscent of both butterflies and the sights and smells of warm weather: ‘floral bouquet’, ‘eye art’, ‘wings of desire’, ‘romance gesture’, ‘un peu d’air sur terre’…
Traditional Japanese washi and magazine clippings, in an open wooden frame.

Rich, saturated colours with emphasis on reds, yellows, oranges and a touch of blues and purples at the edges, evoking the golden hour. Some of the butterflies are folded using images of the sky just after sunrise or just before sunset. The piece plays on the age old symbolism of the butterfly marking moments of transition, beginning of new life, bringer of hope.
